ADHD Assessment Cost: Costs & Funding (2026)

Last updated 27 October 2026 · 8 min read · By Sarah M., Support Coordinator
In short

There is no single official price for an ADHD assessment in Australia, so the ADHD assessment cost depends on who assesses you and where. Things that can affect it include the type of clinician, whether you use the public system, and any Medicare rebate. One announced change is that from early 2027, NSW Health will fund up to 2,500 ADHD assessments by trained GPs with no gap payments (NSW Agency for Clinical Innovation). This guide sits within our wider guide to getting an ADHD diagnosis in Australia.

Key points

  • There is no single official fee for an ADHD assessment, so ask the clinic for a written fee and what it includes before you book.
  • Cost can depend on the type of clinician, how long the assessment takes and whether it is in the public or private system.
  • From early 2027, NSW Health will fund up to 2,500 ADHD assessments by trained GPs, with no out of pocket costs for patients. These places are not yet available in October 2026.
  • Check the Australian ADHD Guideline, healthdirect and your state health department for current pathways.

What changes the ADHD diagnosis cost for adults and children

The same diagnosis can cost different amounts depending on these things, so ask each clinic about them.

  • The type of clinician you see, such as a GP, psychologist, paediatrician or psychiatrist.
  • How long the assessment takes; a detailed clinical interview may take between 2 and 3 hours.
  • Whether you are in the public or private system.
  • Any Medicare rebate and whether the clinic charges a gap above it; ask for the total out-of-pocket cost.
  • Extra reports or testing; the guideline notes direct observation, neuropsychological testing, neuroimaging and EEG did not increase the accuracy of diagnosis (AADPA diagnosis).
  • Telehealth or in person, and travel if the nearest clinician is far away.

Our guides to how ADHD is diagnosed in adults and ADHD tests for kids explain what each step involves.

Free online ADHD assessment and ADHD free assessment for adults

Free online quizzes cannot diagnose ADHD. ReachOut Australia states that ADHD can’t be diagnosed online or through an ADHD quiz, and that symptoms must be present before age 12 (page updated 28 July 2026; ReachOut).

  • Only a qualified professional can assess ADHD, so treat any quiz result as a prompt to see your GP.
  • Our guides to the free ADHD test and the ADHD test for adults explain what these tools can and cannot do.
  • Can you get diagnosed with ADHD for free? From early 2027, possibly through the NSW funded GP places; ask your GP whether any public option exists where you live now.
  • Be cautious of any service that promises a diagnosis from a short online form.
  • Rating scales can assist with diagnosis but should not be used alone, according to the Australian ADHD Guideline’s clinician factsheet (AADPA clinician factsheet).

How to check you are charged correctly for an ADHD assessment

  1. Ask for the fee in writing before you book. Request the total cost, what it includes, any report fee and the cancellation policy.
  2. Ask what Medicare covers. Your GP or the clinic can explain any rebate and whether you need a referral to claim it.
  3. Check what the assessment involves. A thorough assessment by an appropriately trained and credentialled clinician is needed; be wary of services using a quiz alone.
  4. Keep the receipt and report. You may want them later, for example for a future prescriber.
  5. Compare against the public pathway. Ask your GP whether a funded place or public service exists in your state before paying privately.

What to bring to keep the assessment efficient

  • Old school reports, report cards or teacher comments from before age 12; for adults, school reports may be requested.
  • A list of current medicines, supplements and past treatments, so the clinician has the full picture.
  • A short written summary of how symptoms affect home, school or work, since the checklist asks about impairment in at least two settings.
  • A support person who knows you well, if you would like them to add their view during the interview.
