Certificate 4 in Aged Care and Disability: A Practical Guide for Australians

Last updated 27 October 2026 · 8 min read · By Sarah M., Support Coordinator
In short

Certificate 4 in aged care and disability usually refers to two separate Certificate IV qualifications on training.gov.au: Disability Support and Ageing Support. This guide explains each, who can enrol, how online study works and where to start. It follows on from our guide to the disability support worker course.

Key points

  • The nationally recognised qualifications are CHC43121 Certificate IV in Disability Support and CHC43015 Certificate IV in Ageing Support, which are separate courses.
  • Entry to the disability Certificate IV requires a relevant Certificate III in Individual Support, or an approved equivalent pathway.
  • The ageing course requires at least 120 hours of work, so check the work requirement for any course you consider.
  • If you study online, ask the provider how work hours and practical assessment are arranged.

Certificate 4 in aged care and disability: what the courses are

Certificate 4 in aged care and disability: entry requirements

Each Cert IV in aged care and disability pathway has its own entry rules, and your training provider confirms them before you enrol.

  • For CHC43121, entry requires CHC33021 or CHC33015 Certificate III in Individual Support (Disability), or CHC30408 plus the CHCSS00125 skill set.
  • If you hold an older Certificate III, ask the training provider to assess whether it counts as an approved entry pathway.
  • Ask each provider whether your existing work experience can be assessed through recognition of prior learning.
  • Ask which screening, first aid and immunisation requirements apply before any work hours start.
  • Confirm your fees, support and any government funding with the provider directly.

Cert 4 in disability and aged care: which path suits you

Choose the course that matches the people you want to support.

  • Pick Disability Support if you want to work mainly with NDIS participants in homes, community access, respite or supported living.
  • Pick Ageing Support if you plan to work in residential aged care, home care packages or community aged services.
  • Some workers start with a Certificate III and add a Certificate IV later as their role grows.
  • Read our comparison of the disability support worker certificate and cert 4 disability support if you are unsure which level you need.
  • Look at our guide to disability and aged care to see how the two sectors overlap for older participants.

Disability care courses online

Online study can suit theory, but care work is practical, so check how each course handles work hours and assessment.

  • Check that the provider is a registered training organisation and that the course code appears on training.gov.au.
  • Ask how placement is arranged, because some providers organise it and others expect you to find your own host.
  • Ask how practical skills are assessed, and compare the answer with the course requirements on training.gov.au.
  • Compare an online aged care and disability course with face-to-face options on support, timetable flexibility and trainer access.
  • Browse our guide to a disability course online and look at aged care and disability courses online only after you have checked the provider.

Disability aged care courses and certificate options

You can build a career in steps, and each qualification opens different roles.

  1. Start with a Certificate III in Individual Support. It is part of the entry pathway into the Certificate IV in Disability Support.
  2. Work in the sector while you study. Hands-on experience helps you decide between disability and ageing specialisations.
  3. Add a Certificate IV. Choose Disability Support or Ageing Support; the ageing course reflects workers doing specialised tasks.
  4. Consider higher study. See the diploma of disability or a master of disability studies if you are thinking about further study.

ANZSCO lists Aged or Disabled Carer (423111) at Skill Level 4, which means an AQF Certificate II or III, or at least one year of relevant experience, with some roles at Skill Level 3 (Australian Bureau of Statistics).

Certificate in disability and aged care: pay and roles

Pay depends on the award, your classification and your employer. These Aged Care Award rates apply to direct care employees from the first full pay period on or after 1 September 2026 (Fair Work Ombudsman pay guide).

ClassificationFull-time hourly rateCasual hourly rate
Level 1 introductory$32.61$40.76
Level 2 direct carer$34.42$43.03
Level 3 qualified$36.23$45.29
Level 6 team leaderCheck the pay guide$50.73

These rates are for the Aged Care Award. If you work in disability support, check with the Fair Work Ombudsman which award and stream apply to your job.

Courses for disability care and NDIS worker rules

A qualification is not the only requirement for NDIS work.

  • The NDIS Commission defines a worker as anyone employed or otherwise engaged to provide NDIS supports, paid or unpaid, including self-employed people, contractors and volunteers (NDIS Commission).
  • Check the NDIS Commission’s worker information for the Code of Conduct, training and worker screening requirements that apply to your role.
  • Keep copies of your qualifications and training certificates together, since providers ask for them at interview.
  • Read our guide to registered nurse aged care roles if you are weighing a nursing pathway instead.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Enrolling in a course with a similar name without checking the code on training.gov.au, which can leave you with the wrong qualification.
  • Assuming a fully online course is enough without checking its work and assessment requirements.
  • Skipping the entry requirements, then finding out your Certificate III does not qualify you for the Certificate IV you wanted.
  • Paying upfront without a written fee schedule, refund policy and statement of how the provider arranges placement.
  • Choosing aged care or disability on pay alone, instead of trying the work through a Certificate III placement or casual shifts.

Is there a certificate 4 in aged care and disability? +

Not as one qualification. The national register lists CHC43121 Certificate IV in Disability Support and CHC43015 Certificate IV in Ageing Support separately. Check the exact course code with your training provider so you enrol in the one that matches your career plan.

Can I study a disability care course online? +

You may be able to study theory online, but check how practical skills are assessed. Ask each provider how placement works, what it costs and whether they help you find a host before you pay or enrol.

What do I need before starting a Certificate IV in Disability Support? +

Entry requires CHC33021 or CHC33015 Certificate III in Individual Support (Disability), or CHC30408 plus the CHCSS00125 skill set. Your provider can assess whether your existing qualifications and experience meet this pathway.

Do I need a qualification to work with people with disability? +

Not always. ANZSCO lists Aged or Disabled Carer at Skill Level 4, which means an AQF Certificate II or III, or at least one year of relevant experience. NDIS workers also have obligations set by the NDIS Commission, and employers set their own hiring standards, so ask them directly.
