Can a GP Diagnose ADHD in QLD?

Last updated 24 October 2026 · 9 min read · By Sarah M., Support Coordinator
In short

Can a GP diagnose ADHD in QLD? The Australian ADHD Guideline says a thorough assessment by an appropriately trained and credentialled clinician is needed. Whether your GP can do this depends on their training, and many GPs refer on to a paediatrician, psychiatrist or psychologist.

This guide covers who assesses ADHD in Queensland and what an ADHD GP assessment involves. It also compares the rules in other states. For the full pathway, see our guide to the ADHD diagnosis process in Australia.

Key points

  • A thorough assessment by an appropriately trained and credentialled clinician is needed for an ADHD diagnosis, and rating scales should not be used alone.
  • From 1 December 2025, all specialist GPs in Queensland can start, change and continue stimulant medicines for adults with ADHD.
  • Children are usually assessed by a paediatrician, child psychiatrist or child psychologist, and many GPs refer families on.
  • Rules for GPs differ between states, so check what applies where you live before you book.

Can a GP diagnose ADHD in QLD?

Your GP can talk through your concerns and discuss referral options. Whether your own GP can complete the diagnosis depends on their training and how they work.

  • Ask your GP directly whether they assess ADHD themselves or refer to a specialist, because practices handle this differently.
  • Expect a full assessment rather than a checklist; the Guideline says rating scales can assist but should not be used alone.
  • Expect the assessment to take time; the Guideline notes a detailed clinical interview for ADHD may take between 2 and 3 hours (AADPA Guideline).
  • Bring school reports, past assessments and a short list of examples from home, work or study to the first visit.

Queensland GPs and ADHD medicines

Queensland Health has widened who can prescribe, which is separate from who can diagnose. Check the current rules on the Queensland Health ADHD psychostimulants page.

  • From 1 December 2025, all specialist GPs in Queensland can initiate, modify and continue psychostimulants for adults with ADHD (Queensland Health, updated 28 November 2025).
  • Paediatricians’ authorisations are being extended to young adults aged 18 to 24 years.
  • Stimulants are Schedule 8 medicines, which have a recognised therapeutic need but also a high risk of misuse, abuse and dependence (NSW Health).
  • Talk to your GP, psychiatrist or pharmacist about any medicine; never start, stop or share a prescription on your own.

Our guide to who can prescribe ADHD medication explains how this works in more detail.

ADHD GP assessment: what to expect

The steps below are a general guide to an ADHD GP assessment; your GP will tell you how their practice works.

  1. Book a long appointment. Tell reception you want to discuss a possible ADHD assessment so the GP can allow enough time.
  2. Describe what happens day to day. Give examples from home, work, study and relationships; the Guideline looks for impairment in at least two settings.
  3. Share your history. The checklist asks for evidence of symptoms before age 12 years and for at least 6 months (AADPA checklist).
  4. Ask questions. Ask the clinician what they are looking for and what else they may want to rule out.
  5. Agree on next steps. That may be a diagnosis, a referral to a specialist, or further information gathering.

Online quizzes cannot diagnose ADHD, because a thorough assessment by a trained clinician is needed. Our ADHD diagnostic criteria guide explains what clinicians look for.

A few direct questions can save time and money.

  • Phone the practice and ask whether any GP there assesses ADHD in adults, children or both, and what the wait is.
  • Ask what the GP’s training in ADHD involves and whether the assessment is done in one visit or several.
  • Check the gap fee before you book; see our guide to ADHD assessment cost for what to ask.

  • Ongoing difficulty with attention, organisation or impulsive decisions is affecting your work, study, relationships or home life.
  • A teacher, employer or family member has raised the same concerns more than once over a long period.
  • Your child is at least about five years old and struggling at school or in friendships in ways that persist.
  • You already have a diagnosis and want to review your care, or your paediatrician is handing over to adult services.
  • You feel low, anxious or overwhelmed alongside these difficulties.

Common questions

FAQs about GPs and ADHD diagnosis

Can GPs diagnose ADHD? +

Some can, depending on training and state rules. The Australian ADHD Guideline requires a thorough assessment by an appropriately trained and credentialled clinician. If your GP does not assess ADHD, they can refer you to a paediatrician, psychiatrist or psychologist who does.

Can a GP diagnose ADHD in South Australia? +

The arrangements differ from state to state and change over time. Ask your GP whether they assess ADHD themselves or refer on, and check with SA Health. Either way, the assessment should be thorough and carried out by a suitably trained clinician.

Can a GP diagnose ADHD in Western Australia? +

In Western Australia, GPs who complete additional training and receive individual designation from the Department can initiate stimulant treatment for eligible patients aged 10 years and over. Only one stimulant prescriber may prescribe for each patient at a time. This rule is about starting medicine, so ask your GP whether they hold this designation and whether they also assess ADHD or refer on.
