Is Fibromyalgia a Disability in Australia?

Last updated 27 October 2026 · 5 min read · By Sarah M., Support Coordinator
In short

Is fibromyalgia a disability in Australia? It can be: the Disability Discrimination Act defines disability broadly, while the NDIS and the Disability Support Pension look at how an impairment affects you and how long it lasts. Each system uses a different test, as explained in our guide on whether a chronic illness is a disability.

Is fibromyalgia a disability in Australia: what it means

There is no automatic yes or no, so each system asks about impact, evidence and how long the effects last.

TermMeaningExample
Disability under the DDAA broad legal definition that does not rely on a formal diagnosis of disabilityAsking an employer for reasonable adjustments
NDIS disability requirementsA permanent impairment that substantially reduces functional capacityEvidence that an impairment substantially reduces your ability to manage daily tasks
Impairment ratingA points score under the Impairment Tables used for the Disability Support PensionMedical evidence of how pain affects activities
Medical evidenceReports from your GP or specialist about diagnosis, treatment and effectsA letter describing what you can and cannot do

Is fibromyalgia considered a disability in Australia under the DDA, NDIS and DSP?

Each system answers a different question, so you can be covered by one and not another.

SystemWhat it says
Disability Discrimination Act 1992Disability includes physical, neurological and other conditions, covering disability you have now, had in the past, may have in future or are perceived to have (Australian Human Rights Commission)
DDA fact sheetThe definition is broad and does not rely on a formal diagnosis (Department of Education)
NDISA permanent impairment must substantially reduce functional capacity, and you will likely need NDIS supports for life (NDIA)
Disability Support PensionFor a physical, intellectual or psychiatric impairment attracting at least 20 points under the Impairment Tables, expected to persist for at least 2 years, that leaves you unable to work 15 or more hours per week for the next 2 years (DSS)

Is fibromyalgia on the disability list?

The NDIS uses diagnosis lists as evidence, and every application is checked against the NDIS disability requirements.

  • NDIS guidelines say a List A diagnosis means the NDIA will likely decide you meet the disability requirements (NDIS guidelines).
  • A List B diagnosis means the NDIA will likely decide your impairment is likely to be permanent.
  • Check the current lists in the NDIS guidelines, because they are updated, and do not rely on older summaries.
  • If your condition is not on either list, your evidence needs to show a permanent impairment that substantially reduces your functional capacity.
  • You must be aged 0 to 64 to apply (NDIA).

Fibromyalgia disability in Australia: older 2018, 2020 and 2021 information

Information about fibromyalgia and disability published in 2018, 2020 or 2021 may describe tests or guidelines that have since been updated.

  • Do not rely on a year-specific page, because tests and guidelines change.
  • Use the current DSS and NDIS pages linked here, and check the date on anything you read.
  • For the Disability Support Pension, an impairment rating needs a diagnosis by an appropriately qualified medical practitioner, reasonable treatment and stabilisation (DSS guide).

Common questions

FAQs about fibromyalgia and disability

Is fibromyalgia a disability? +

It can be. Under the Disability Discrimination Act, disability is defined broadly and does not rely on a formal diagnosis. The NDIS and Disability Support Pension use stricter tests based on lasting impact, so gather evidence from your GP or specialist.

Is fibromyalgia considered a disability in Australia? +

It depends on the system and your evidence. The DDA can cover it, the NDIS asks about a permanent impairment that substantially reduces functional capacity, and the pension uses points under the Impairment Tables. Ask your GP about supporting reports.

Is fibromyalgia on the disability list? +

Check the current List A and List B in the NDIS guidelines. If a condition is not listed, your evidence still needs to show a permanent impairment that substantially reduces your functional capacity, and that you will likely need NDIS supports for life.

If pain or fatigue affects your daily routine, TQN Care can help with practical support at home and in the community, so see our NDIS services or make a referral.
