How do I apply for the NDIS?

Last reviewed 1 July 2026 · 7 min read · By Sarah M., Support Coordinator
In short

You apply for the NDIS by making an Access Request to the NDIA. You can call 1800 800 110 or complete an Access Request Form, then supply evidence from your treating professionals about your disability and its impact. The NDIA reviews your request and tells you whether you meet the access criteria.

Step one: confirm you meet the access criteria

Before lodging anything, check the basics: you are under 65, you satisfy the residence rules, and you live with a permanent and significant disability. Reading the eligibility criteria first saves time and helps you gather the right evidence rather than submitting an incomplete request.

Step two: make your Access Request

There are two ways to start. You can phone the NDIA on 1800 800 110 and complete a verbal Access Request, or you can fill in the Access Request Form and email it back. A Local Area Coordinator or early childhood partner can sit with you and help complete this step.

Have your contact details and date of birth ready.
Provide proof of Australian residency or citizenship.
List the treating professionals who know your disability.
Note the everyday activities your disability affects.

Step three: gather strong evidence

Evidence is the heart of a well-prepared request. Ask your GP, specialist, or allied health professionals to describe your diagnosis, confirm it is permanent, and explain how it affects movement, communication, learning, or self-care. Recent, specific reports that link your impairment to daily impact are far more useful than old or general letters.

Step four: what happens after you submit

The NDIA assesses your request and usually responds within 21 days, sometimes asking for more information. If access is granted, you move to planning, where you discuss your goals and supports. If your request is declined, you can ask for a review of the decision, and you can reapply if your circumstances change.

Preparing thoroughly improves your chances of a smooth process, though no provider can promise a particular access outcome. The decision rests entirely with the NDIA against the legislated criteria.

Common questions

Questions, answered.

How long does an NDIS application take? +
The NDIA aims to decide an Access Request within 21 days of receiving all required information. Gathering complete evidence upfront helps avoid delays.
How much does it cost to apply? +
Applying is free. You may pay for medical reports your professionals charge for, but the NDIA does not charge a fee to lodge an Access Request.
What if my Access Request is rejected? +
You can request an internal review within three months, and later an external review if needed. You can also reapply if your situation or evidence changes.
Can someone apply on my behalf? +
Yes. A family member, carer, or nominee can help you apply with your consent, and Local Area Coordinators can guide you through the steps.
What evidence do I need to apply? +
Reports from your treating health professionals confirming your diagnosis, that the impairment is permanent, and how it affects your everyday functioning.
Where do I send my Access Request Form? +
You can email the completed form to the NDIA or lodge it by phoning 1800 800 110. A Local Area Coordinator can confirm the current lodgement details for your area.
