How it works under your plan
Respite for Carers & your NDIS funding.
Short breaks are usually funded from your Core Supports budget, with Short Term Accommodation and Assistance covering stays that include support, and in-home or centre-based respite delivered as part of your daily supports. Because it sits in Core, you can plan breaks around your needs and your carer's. We support self-managed, plan-managed and NDIA-managed plans, and we do not guarantee funding outcomes.
What is the difference between STA and in-home respite? +
Short Term Accommodation and Assistance covers a supported stay away from home, while in-home respite means a worker provides support at home so your usual carer can rest.
Is respite for the carer or the participant? +
It is participant-centred support: you are well cared for and take part in activities, and at the same time your regular carer gets a genuine break.
Can respite be planned in advance? +
Yes. Many families set up planned, regular breaks so everyone can rely on them, and one-off stays can also be arranged.
Does my normal support continue during respite? +
Your day-to-day support continues throughout the break, delivered by screened workers under the NDIS Quality and Safeguards framework.
What happens during a short stay? +
Stays typically include personal support plus outings, social time and activities chosen around your interests.
