Becoming an NDIS support worker

NDIS Support Worker Tax Deductions PDF: Free Template & Examples

Last updated 29 October 2026 · 9 min read · By Sarah M., Support Coordinator
In short

For NDIS support worker tax deductions, the ATO says you can claim driving your own car directly between clients’ homes on the same day, but not normal trips between home and work or conventional clothing. Any claim also needs a record to prove it. This guide gives you a plain checklist and points you to the ATO’s own toolkit, which is published as a PDF.

Key points

  • The ATO says to claim a work-related deduction you must have spent the money and not been reimbursed, the expense must directly relate to earning your income, and you must have a record to prove it.
  • Driving between clients’ homes on the same day can be claimed, but trips between home and work and conventional clothing cannot.
  • Sole traders must keep financial records for at least 5 years, and must register for GST within 21 days once their GST turnover reaches the ATO’s GST registration threshold (an ABN is needed first).
  • Pay rates listed below start from the first full pay period on or after 1 December 2026, so check Fair Work’s Pay and Conditions Tool for the rate that applies to you now.

Sole trader support worker tax deductions and disability support worker sole trader tax

If you work for yourself as a sole trader, these points apply on top of the ATO’s deduction test.

  • Register for an ABN, which is a unique 11-digit number, free to get through the Australian Business Register, once you are running a business.
  • Register for GST within 21 days once your business reaches the GST registration threshold on the ATO’s registering for GST page; you need an ABN first (ATO).
  • Keep financial records for at least 5 years; a sole trader also has unlimited liability, so personal assets are at risk if things go wrong (business.gov.au).
  • Remember a sole trader does not have to make super contributions for themselves.
  • For NDIS worker screening, sole traders are considered both a worker and an employer, so you verify your own application within 28 days of the verification request.
  • Read how to become an independent support worker and about support worker insurance.

  • Which rate applies: social and community services employees are paid the final Equal Remuneration Order rate, so the award’s base clause rates alone understate their minimum pay.
  • Casual loading: under clause 10.4 of the award, casual employees are paid a loading of 25% on top of the minimum hourly rate.
  • Weekend and holiday: from the first full pay period on or after 1 December 2026, a full-time or part-time home care employee at disability care level 2 pay point 1 earns $49.79 an hour on Saturday, $66.38 on Sunday and $82.98 on a public holiday.
  • Minimum shift: under clause 10.5, part-time and casual employees doing disability services work must be paid for at least 2 hours per shift, while other social and community services employees have a 3-hour minimum.
  • Overnight pay: check the award and pay guide for sleepover and overnight rules, or ask Fair Work.
  • Pay increase: the Fair Work Commission’s Annual Wage Review 2026 records a 23 per cent increase in the minimum award rate for a Certificate III-qualified disability home care worker, to be implemented by 1 October 2027 (Fair Work Commission).

What counts as high income depends on your situation, so check the ATO’s current tax rates or ask a registered tax agent. If you are considering a novated lease, raise it with your employer and a tax adviser.
